Meet Professor Shan Rajendra -
Expert Gastroenterologist, Endoscopist and Hepatologist
With an undergraduate medical degree from the National University of Ireland in 1988, Professor Rajendra boasts a rich career in Gastroenterology & Hepatology. Having served in the UK’s National Health Service for 6 years, he then pursued a Research Fellowship at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London (MSC) and a Doctorate in Medicine (MD) at the University of Sheffield, UK.

Currently holding the position of Professor of Medicine (Gastroenterology) at the University of New South Wales, Professor Rajendra is also the Senior Clinical Academic Gastroenterologist/Interventi nal Endoscopist and Head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Bankstown Hospital, Sydney. His expertise lies in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, excelling in the removal of large polyps and performing complex bile/pancreatic duct procedures.

Prof Rajendra is the Founding Director and Lead Investigator of the GastroIntestinal Viral Oncology Group, Ingham Institute, Liverpool, Sydney. This was the first group in the world to discover that high risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is strongly associated with Barrett’s dysplasia and oesophageal adenocarcinoma.
His main research interest is gastro esophageal reflux disease and has well over 50 publications in peer reviewed international journals as first or last author. Till recently he was a WED committee member of the International Society of Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE).

Punitha Rajasooria
Practice Manager and Strategy Director for Gastroenterology and Hepatology Specialists
Punitha graduated with a LLB (Honours) [London] in 1996 and worked as a Marketing Executive in Kuala Lumpur before migrating to Tasmania in 2006 and became Practice Manager for a medical private practice in Launceston for 4 years. Since moving to Sydney in 2010, she has continued in the role and manages all of Professor Rajendra’ s rooms in relation to administration, accounts payable and receivable and research expenses. Punitha is also in charge of business operations and is now the strategy director for Gastroenterology and Hepatology Specialists.
